The Bean: Tanzania Songea Kusini Peaberry
This lively, nicely balanced coffee really delivers on its promises so there's little wonder why it has quickly joined the ranks of our customers' all-time favorites. Whether by intent of happy accident, this is indeed a tasty coffee. It's lively and medium bodied with notes of lemon and spice and an aroma that makes it worth getting up for. When first ground it floods the room with a bright, citrusy fragrance while in the cup the flavors of lemon and spice shine through. What this coffee doesn't have is a pedigree, or much in the way of a traceable heritage, characteristics we tend to value almost as much as great taste. Instead, these peaberies were shade grown and hand picked throughout the Ruvuma region at altitudes ranging from about 1,400 to 2,000 meters (4,600 - 6,500 ft), then gathered from 11 co-ops and small-hold farmer groups throughout the country's Songea district.
We like this coffee, a lot, and think you will too.

As a result, beans from hundreds of farms were hand sorted and blended to create this lot. Even the name Kusini doesn't add much in the way of clarity — it seems to be taken from a resort camp in nearby Serengeti National Park. The best we can figure is it simply sounded like a good name, so they used it. Despite its lack of pedigree, and based solely on its satisfying taste, this coffee deserves your attention. It will repay you with mouthsfull of enjoyment.
